SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA -- Senior right-hander Kevin Correia scattered seven hits in his second complete game of the season as Cal Poly defeated Portland 9-1 on Sunday afternoon in Baggett Stadium.
Correia (5-2) struck out five and walked two as Cal Poly won two of three games against Portland and improved to 12-16-1 on the season. Portland fell to 6-8.
Portland had a runner at third base in the first inning and scored a run on a single by Travis Hanson and a double by Matt Hollod in the second frame, but Correia shut down the Pilots the rest of the way, retiring 24 of the last 30 Portland batters and allowing no one to reach third base.
Designated hitter Bryan Gant and shortstop Scott Anderson led the Mustangs offensively with three hits apiece. Gant had an RBI triple and two singles while Anderson broke out of his recent slump with three singles.
Left fielder Brian Haskell belted a pinch-hit two-run home run to left in the eighth inning for Cal Poly, his third round-tripper of the season. Bill Saul, who started in left field for the Mustangs, smashed a three-run triple into the right-field corner in Cal Poly's five-run second-inning rally.
Portland first baseman Matt Hollod had a double and single for Portland with the team¹s lone RBI.
The loss went to Eric Hull (0-3). Hull retired all six Cal Poly batters for a save in Portland¹s 9-7 win Saturday night, but surrendered five runs and six hits in two innings Sunday.
Portland visits Oregon State on Tuesday before returning to California to play Loyola Marymount in a three-game series next weekend in Los Angeles.
