Los Angeles, CA (March 16, 2002) – Portland jumped out to a 10-2 lead after four innings Saturday and never looked back in a 14-10 slugfest win at Loyola Marymount, improving to 7-9 overall and 1-1 in conference play. LMU scored eight runs after the fifth inning to close within one run after the eighth but couldn't close the deal to fall to 7-16 overall and 1-1 in the WCC.
Portland, which finished with 19 hits and eight doubles, scored on all four Lion pitchers and in all but two. The Pilots scored a single run in each of the first three innings and then chased Lions starter Kevin Jenson with four runs in the top of the fourth. Three more runs in the top of the fifth kicked the lead to 10-2.
The offensive firepower was led by center fielder Matt Coleman. Hitting in the ninth spot of the Pilot's order, Coleman finished 5-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Adding three hits each were Cory Lunde, who went 3-for-4 with four runs scored and three RBI, Matt Allen, who was 3-for-5 with three RBI, and Brad Stewart, who was 3-for-4. Allen’s two doubles moved the senior into a tie for ninth all-time with 33 career doubles, and into a tie for fifth with 56 extra-base hits.
The run support allowed Matt Hollod to pick up the win as he allowed nine hits and seven runs, three earned. He improves to 3-0 on the season while Eric Hull pitched three innings of relief to earn his third save of the season.
Hollod allowed just two runs through four innings before the Lions cut the lead to 10-4 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth.
The Lions cut the lead to 10-7 with three more runs in the bottom of the sixth, but Portland responded with a run in the seventh to push the lead to 11-7.
A three-run eighth from LMU cut Portland’s lead to 11-10, but Kory Casto’s two-run double and Travis Hanson’s RBI single provided a 14-10 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth.
The three-game series concludes Sunday at 1 p.m.
