CORVALLIS, Ore. - Pat Stevens tripled home the tying run and then scored the go-ahead run on Seth Pietsch's double in the sixth inning as Oregon State beat Portland 5-2 in non-league baseball Monday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.
Stevens finished Monday's game 2-for-3, adding a run-scoring single in the seventh inning as the Beavers scored a pair of insurance runs against the Pilots (8-13, 2-4 West Coast).
OSU was trailing 2-1 going into the bottom of the sixth against Portland. With one out, Andy Jarvis singled to right; Stevens followed with a
line-drive triple to left-centerfield to drive in the tying run. One out later, Seth Pietsch yanked his 13th double of the season down the leftfield line to score Stevens for a 3-2 lead.
Oregon State finished its scoring in the eighth after J.R. Runyon began the inning with a double off the left-centerfield fence. With one out, Brian Barden lofted a double to centerfield that sent Runyon only to third as he had to see if the ball would be caught.
After Jarvis walked, Stevens blooped a single over third base to score Runyon, and Wick Udy followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 5-2.
Mike Ekstrom, Ty Kline, Don Stykel and Jared Sanders combined to pitch a seven-hitter for the Beavers. Kline earned the win for his 4 1/3 innings in relief, allowing one run on four hits and striking out four.
Brock Griffin was 2-for-4 for Portland. Kyle Corra took the pitching loss, going 5 2/3 innings and allowing three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out three.
Portland took a 1-0 lead without a hit in the third inning, as Matt Allen walked and eventually scored on a pair of wild pitches. Oregon State tied the game in the fifth when Pietsch was hit by a pitch and scored on Tom Creighton's single to left-center, but the Pilots regained the lead in the top of the sixth on Kory Casto's leadoff homer to straightaway centerfield.
