SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA -- Three consecutive singles with two outs in the ninth inning produced the winning run as Cal Poly edged Portland 3-2 in a non-conference baseball game Friday night in Baggett Stadium.
Portland relief pitcher Zach Yarbrough struck out the first two Cal Poly batters in the ninth, but Bill Saul singled to right, Bryan Gant singled up the middle and Tony Alcantar also singled to center field to knock in the winning run for the Mustangs.
With its second straight win after losing 11 of 12, Cal Poly improves to 11-15-1 for the season. Portland fell to 5-7.
Cal Poly also scored its first two runs with two outs. A pair of groundouts started the third inning for the Mustangs, but Alcantar drew a walk and catcher Kyle Wilson belted his fifth home run of the season, a two-run shot to left, that tied the score at 2-2.
The score remained that way until the final inning as Portland starter Steve Chamberlain settled down and retired 12 batters in a row, eight via strikeout.
Cal Poly right-hander Tyler Fitch pitched eight strong innings, allowing two runs and seven hits with one strikeout and two walks. Reliever Mike Bille (1-0) picked up the win with a perfect ninth inning.
Portland scored its two runs in the first inning on a one-out single by Cory Lunde and a two-run home run to right by Kory Casto, his first homer of the season.
Gant had two of Cal Poly¹s seven hits, both singles. Matt Hollod collected two of Portland¹s seven hits, both doubles.
The two teams resume their three-game series Saturday at 5 p.m. The series finale will be Sunday at 11 a.m.
