SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA -- Kory Casto belted a second-inning grand slam as Portland overcame an early 3-1 deficit and beat Cal Poly 9-7 in a non-conference baseball game Saturday night at Baggett Stadium.
With the win, Portland tied the series against Cal Poly. The series finale is scheduled for Sunday at 11 a.m.
Casto came into the series with no home runs for the season. The sophomore right fielder now has two, adding his two-out grand slam to the two-run shot he hit in the first inning of Friday¹s game.
The blast gave Portland a 6-3 lead and the Pilots never looked back, improving to 6-7 on the season. Cal Poly fell to 11-16-1.
Portland outhit Cal Poly 13-12, led by Matt Hollod with two singles and a double. Casto, Eric Hull and Brad Stewart each added a pair of hits for the Pilots. Matt Allen drove in two runs with a squeeze bunt in the first inning and a groundout in the sixth. Brock Griffin also had two RBIs with a sacrifice fly in the third and a double in the fifth.
Sophomore catcher Kyle Wilson had a 4-for-5 day at the plate for Cal Poly with three doubles and a single, knocking in a pair of runs. Designated hitter Alex Chavarria added two hits and a pair of RBIs while shortstop Chris Hageman also had two hits and one RBI.
Hollod (2-0) pitched six innings for the win, allowing six runs and nine hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. Eric Hull, Portland's fourth pitcher, struck out four in two innings for his second save of the year.
Cal Poly, which struck out 13 times in Friday¹s win, added 11 more strikeouts Saturday.
Nick Doan (0-4) suffered the loss, surrendering seven runs and six hits. Nolan Moser pitched 6 2/3 strong innings in relief, giving up just one earned run and seven hits with eight strikeouts.
