Brian Barden’s two-run double in the sixth inning Tuesday broke up a close game, as Oregon State (25-14) went on to an 11-4 win over Portland (16-21).
Oregon State led 4-2 going into the sixth when the wheels fell off for the Pilots. Will Hudson singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on a passed ball. A come-backer to the mound caught Hudson a bit too far off second base, but Portland pitcher Jeff Cambers overthrew third baseman Cory Lunde, allowing Hudson to score. After a hit batter and sacrifice bunt moved runners to second and third, Barden whacked his two-run double.
Tom Creighton’s two-run freak triple in the seventh plated two more runs. Creighton’s clean single took a horrendous bounce over the right shoulder of Portland right fielder Kory Casto. Aaron Mathews followed with a sacrifice fly to score Creighton.
Trevor Hahn dropped to 0-2 on the season in his first career start for Portland. The freshman allowed only three hits in 3.2 innings, but walked seven batters. OSU’s first three runs in the fourth inning - though all earned - came after a pair of walks, a sacrifice bunt and a single. Hahn then botched a pick-off attempt at first with an overthrow.
One out later, Hahn walked another batter, then gave up an RBI single before being lifted.
Joshua Garcia improved to 3-2 for OSU, despite pitching just 1.2 innings.
Portland answered back in the bottom of the fourth on Joe Watson’s RBI double to dead center, and Matt Hollod’s RBI single.
Kory Casto’s two-run homer in the eighth inning, his eighth of the season, provided Portland’s final two runs. Hollod and Brock Griffin each had two hits for Portland.
