Nate Jaqua’s header in the 75th minute Wednesday lifted Portland (4-2-0) to a 3-2 win over pesky Seattle University in non-conference men’s soccer action.
Seattle scored a pair of second-half goals to knot the game at 2-2, but Jaqua was on the business end of a Jarrod Weis free kick just over three minutes after the Redhawks (3-3-1), had evened the match.
Sheldin Maistry’s third and fourth goals of the season put Portland ahead 2-0 28:07 into the match. Maistry pounded in a rebound when Kyle Tanner’s shot was blocked at 16:02. Twelve minutes later, Heath Pearce served up a perfect cross, and Maistry was able to slot his header to the far post.
Seattle eased back into the match when Alex Chursky ran onto a through ball from Nick McCluskey, pulling Portland keeper Curtis Spiteri off his line. Chursky slotted his shot under a rushing Spiteri from 17 yards. Pat Doran then equalized on a counter-attack at 71:27, weaving through the Portland defense from midfield, finally rocking a 17-yard shot through the defense and past Spiteri.
The two teams each had 11 shots, but Seattle was whistled for 19 fouls and three cautions.
Portland hosts Creighton Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m., and Cal Poly on Sunday at 2:15 p.m.
