Despite playing a man down for over 53 minutes Sunday, #12 Portland (6-2-0) beat Cal Poly 3-0 in non-conference men’s action.
Portland’s Josh Brown was sent off at 36:46 with a hard tackle red card, but the Pilots responded with a goal less than two minutes later when Alejandro Salazar’s cross from the endline was headed in by Eric Cronkrite at 38:29. Cronkrite has three goals in the past two games.
The Pilots went ahead 2-0 at 64:47 after Nate Jaqua led Sheldin Maistry near the top of the box, and Maistry beat Cal Poly’s goalie to the ball, chipping the ball into an open net from 30 yards out. Maistry has four goals in the last three games.
Portland sealed the win at 66:15 with a Salazar goal, who knocked a rebound in when a Maistry shot was stopped but not controlled by Cal Poly’s keeper.
The Pilots outshot Cal Poly 13-7, and Curtis Spiteri had to make only two saves for the win. Justin Carter played the final 13:14 in goal for Portland without incident.
