PORTLAND, Ore.- Wanda Rozwadowska scored two goals and assisted on another in Portland’s 4-0 win over Gonzaga in the West Coast Conference opener for both teams. The Pilots continued their dominating play by out-shooting the Bulldogs 29-3, and racking up 12 corner kicks to Gonzaga’s one. With their eighth straight win, Portland improves to 12-2-0 overall and Gonzaga falls to 8-5-0.
Portland had eight corner kicks in the first 13 minutes of action, keeping Gonzaga goalie Ashley Haugen very busy out of the gates. Haugen punched out or handled four of the corners, but the Pilots put one in to take the 1-0 lead. Lindsey Huie found Kristen Moore at the top of the box and Moore dealt the ball into the goal box. Wanda Rozwadowska tapped it to Kari Evans who finished to the left post.
Jennifer Tuttle tallied her fourth goal of the season in the 35th minute. Huie weaved past two Bulldog defenders before leaving the ball to Tuttle, wide open at the top of the penalty box. Tuttle came on at full speed and rocketed a shot past a fully-extended Haugen to the left side of the goal.
Portland went up 3-0 with just 12 seconds remaining on the clock in the first half. Angie Woznuk streaked down the right flank and crossed to Rozwadowska who headed in her fifth goal of the season from five yards out.
The Pilots’ final tally came in the 50th minute with Rozwadowska rifling a shot off the crossbar and into the net from seven yards. Huie again assisted on the strike, marking the third consecutive match that she has had at least two assists.
Freshman goalkeepers Cori Alexander and Ruth Gilliam combined for Portland’s 11 shutout of the season. Each made one save for the Pilots. Haugen made 10 saves in the Bulldog net. Rozwadowska put five of her six shots on goal to lead the Pilots.
“We’re starting to put it all together,” said Pilot head coach Garrett Smith. “We’re off to a great start in conference and our goal is to win the WCC. The goals are coming at the right time and we hope it continues.”
