The University of Portland women’s tennis team spent the weekend in Boise, Idaho for the Boise State/Jack Taylor Indoor classic. The Pilots played tennis for three days, Oct. 10-12, in the tournament which featured a loosely-based, round-robin format. Match-ups were randomly selected and included tennis players from Portland, Oregon, Lewis-Clark State, Weber State, Utah and Boise State.
A few highlights from day one of the classic included the Pilots winning six of their 12 singles matches. Portland junior Sanja Indic and sophomore Cristin Sammis both won two matches, while senior Kaori Tanabe and junior Alyson Tyson recorded one win each.
Portland continued its singles match success during day two of the classic. Junior Deidre Ring-Marrinson won her singles match as did Sammis, Tyson and Tanabe.
Day three saw Tyson and Indic both win their singles matches, while Ring-Marrinson and freshman Adele Rockett had Portland’s best doubles showing of the weekend as they nearly beat the Weber State team of Elana Smit and Maria Bublik. Smit/Bublik took the match 8-6.
Next up for the Pilots is the ITA Regional Championships on Oct. 24-27 in Stanford, Calif.
