BOISE, Idaho- The University of Portland men’s golf team won the Boise State Bronco Round-Up and had three top-five finishers individually out of the 11-team field at Falcon Crest Golf Course. Junior Mike McCabe claimed the tournament crown after carding a 4-under par 212. Seniors Tony Peressini (-1) and Justin Burwell (Even) finished third and tied for fourth respectively. All three golfers set new career-low 54-hole scores.
The Pilots shot a first round team score of 281 (-7), three strokes off Portland’s all-time team low for a single round. McCabe shot a career-best 66 (-6) and was joined in red numbers by Peressini (-2) and Burwell (-1). Peressini’s first round 69 was also a career-low at UP.
The Pilots entered the second round with a three stroke lead over host Boise State and would extend that margin with another solid team effort. The Pilots finished Monday with a 287 (-1) for their second consecutive under par team score. McCabe shot a 70 (-2) while Burwell and sophomore Kevin Beavers came in at even par. Redshirt freshman Jake Easterly shot a second round 73, while Peressini’s 75 brought him to even par through 36 holes. Portland had an eight stroke lead entering the final round.
The Pilots’ final round 294 gave them a 54-hole total of 862, besting second place Boise State by six strokes. McCabe’s final round 76 was good enough to hold off Boise State’s Graham DeLaet by one stroke. All five Portland golfers finished in the top-20 as Jake Easterly earned his first top-10 of the season, tying for 10th with a 6-over par 222. Beavers’ final round 76 placed him in a tie for 13th place with a 223.
The 862 was the lowest team score for Portland this season, and best showing since an 861 at the Nevada Wolf Pack Classic in 1999.
