PORTLAND, Ore.- Lindsey Huie scored two goals and Angie Woznuk tallied the third in Portland’s 3-0 win over Saint Mary’s in a West Coast Conference match at Merlo Field. It was the ninth straight win for the Pilots and marked the 12th shutout of the season. Portland (13-2-0) improves their WCC record to 2-0, while Saint Mary’s (5-7-1) falls to 1-1 in conference play.
Wanda Rozwadowska, the team’s leading goal-scorer entering the contest, showed her distributing abilities by sending a through ball to Huie streaking down the right side of the penalty box. Huie tapped the ball and settled from seven yards out, then rifled a shot to the lower left corner putting the Pilots up 1-0.
Woznuk gave Portland a 2-0 lead in the 19th minute as she surprised Gaels’ goalie Amaya Zabala with a shot from 22 yards out. Woznuk scrambled between the Saint Mary’s defense before spinning and blasting a shot past Amaya, who got a hand on, but couldn’t stop the ball.
Huie capped the scoring with an unassisted strike in the 52nd minute, her sixth goal of the season tying her for the team-lead with Rozwadowska. Similar to Woznuk’s first half score, Huie found herself with some space outside the box and rocketed a shot that went through the hands of Amaya and found the back of the net.
“We played well for 90 minutes which we have struggled to do at times this year,” said Huie. “It was a good win and we’re playing at the level we want to be at right now.”
The Pilots were the better team on the field creating scoring chances on a regular basis. The final stats had Portland with 20 shots, Saint Mary’s five. Kristen Moore and Lisa Sari tallied three shots each for the Pilots, while Gaels forward Lucianne Crenshaw had three shots, with one on goal.
Portland almost snuck another one in the net in the 83rd minute when Huie unleashed another patented blast that was blocked high into the air and recovered by Amaya. Huie put five of her six shots on goal while Woznuk had a total of five shot attempts in the match.
“Saint Mary’s is a quality team, noted head coach Garrett Smith. “They have a lot of team speed and they’re fiesty, but we played well and it translated into a good win.”
“It’s tough playing during fall break because the players tend to take the break onto the field with them,” noted head Smith about Portland’s week-long break from school. “We’re finishing chances, which allows us to make some subs and keep our legs fresh. That’s a good benefit to have at this point of the season.”
UP NEXT: The Pilots take on San Francisco in another important WCC match on Sun., Oct. 19 at Merlo Field. The game will start at 2:15 p.m. Portland then hits the road to play Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount and Santa Clara before concluding the regular season by hosting San Diego on Nov. 8.
