EUGENE, Ore.- Sophomore Lindsey Huie’s unassisted strike in the 79th minute held as the University of Portland won their fifth straight contest, fourth in a row by a score of 1-0. The Pilots ran their shutout streak to five and improve to 9-2-0 overall, Oregon drops 5-5-0 with the defeat.
Huie, returning from a foot sprain that forced her to miss the last two matches, once again came up big for Portland in a clutch situation. A fabulous individual effort created the opportunity and the team’s leading scorer capitalized at the 78:38 mark. After beating two Oregon defenders to the top of the penalty box, Huie spun and blasted a 19-yard shot to the top right shelf over Duck keeper Domenique Lainez.
“It was a great effort from Lindsey,” said Pilot coach Garrett Smith. “In the second half, our midfielders broke out and had several counterattacks. Finally, one happened to produce a timely goal.”
Portland got off to a slow start and did not manage their first shot on goal until about 36 minute minutes into the first half. The Pilots outshot the Ducks 5-2 in the first period, and 8-6 for the game. Portland had three corners, the Ducks zero.
“We didn’t come out strong at the start which is very uncharacteristic of us,” said Smith. “We turned it around after halftime and played much better. It was a battle of the midfield and we had a majority of possession in the second period.”
Despite low shot numbers, the Pilots were in and around the Ducks penalty box throughout the second half, but could not manage many good scoring threats. Oregon also penetrated the Pilot defense on a few occasions but did not test Pilot freshman keeper Cori Alexander often. Alexander made three saves in recording her ninth shutout of the season. Lainez made one save for the Ducks.
Smith can’t complain about the outcome, despite his team’s struggles. “It was not a good performance by our standards, but it was a great result to get another win on the road.”
