PORTLAND, Ore.- Angie Woznuk’s first career goal proved to be the game-winner as Lindsey Huie assisted on both Pilot scores, in a 2-1 win over in-state rival Oregon State at Merlo Field. Portland moves to 10-2-0 on the season, while the Beavers fall to 4-6-1 with the loss.
Portland’s first strike came in the 11th minute off a corner kick taken by sophomore Lindsey Huie. A perfect cross played into the box was snagged by Beaver goalie Melissa Onstad, but Onstad had the ball knocked loose and Pilot senior Imani Dorsey was had an open net from three yards out. Dorsey notched her second goal of the season.
Huie also had a play in Portland’s final score. She found Woznuk just inside the penalty box on the right side. Woznuk dribbled by a defender, settled at the six yard line and slotted a shot to the right post past Onstad.
“Finally, my first one, it feels great,” said Woznuk who returned to action this week from a hamstring injury. “It’s my first game really back and my hamstring doesn’t hurt, but it could feel a little better.”
Once again the Portland defense was dominant, only giving up three shots for the match. The only miscue came late in the second half when Oregon State forward Tessa Baker gathered a goal kick and beat Pilot reserve freshman keeper Ruth Gilliam one-on-one. It was Baker’s fifth goal of the season.
Portland outshot Oregon State 18-3, and held an 8-0 corner kick advantage. The Pilots put seven shots on goal, while the Beavers managed just one. Portland’s midfield and defenders controlled the match from beginning to end, maintaining possession and preventing any Beaver threats minus the 88th minute score.
“We’re really growing up,” said junior defender Kristen Rogers. “At times it’s been a challenge, but the experienced players have a lot of responsibility to educate the younger players, and they’ve really stepped up.”
Five different Pilots registered at least two shots, while Woznuk and Jennifer Tuttle led the way with four each. The dispersion of shots and goals is encouraging to Pilot coach Garrett Smith. “It’s nice to see the freshmen learning. We are functioning without Christine (Sinclair) and I like what I see. We got a great group of freshmen and their proving themselves.”
