PORTLAND, Ore.- Seven different Pilots tallied goals and senior defender Imani Dorsey racked up two goals off headers in No. 5 Portland’s 8-0 route of Portland State at Merlo Field. It was the first-ever meeting between the crosstown rivals, and the Pilots put forth their best outing of the season in the River City Rivalry match. With their seventh straight win, the Pilots improve to 11-2-0, while the Vikings drop to 5-7-0 with the loss.
Junior Kristen Moore got things started in the 10th minute off a corner kick from sophomore Lindsey Huie. Moore gathered the cross unmarked, took one dribble to the top of the penalty box and blasted a 20 yard strike to the upper left corner of the goal.
Huie wasn’t done setting up the scores as she found freshman Angie Woznuk on a deep ball over the defense five minutes later. Woznuk took one touch then slotted a shot past Viking keeper Joell Giger from 18 yards to give Portland the 2-0 lead.
Huie tallied her third assist of the first half off another corner kick in the 42nd minute. This time it was Dorsey on the receiving end as she knocked in a five yard header to the left post. The Pilots went into the break with a comfortable 3-0 lead, but Portland exploded for five more goals in the second stanza.
The Pilots started the second period with a different lineup, but the result was very similar. Second half substitutes Kelsy Hollenbeck, Rebecca Meierbachtol, Colleen Salisbury, Elsa Hume and Jennifer Bosa all registered either a goal or an assist in the final 45 minutes.
In the 57th minute, junior Jessica Heller found the net from eight yards to the right post. Hollenbeck served a ball down the right side to a streaking Woznuk. The freshman crossed a perfect pass to Heller who deposited the ball past Giger.
Dorsey headed in her second score of the match in the 73rd minute off a cross from junior Kristen Moore. September’s WCC co-Player of the Month doubled her season goal total to four with the score.
“I’m very happy with where our team is at right now,” said Dorsey. “We still have some growing to do, but we’re definitely getting better each game. We’re having fun and it’s encouraging to put numbers like that on the board.”
Meierbachtol, a freshman from Hood River, Ore., notched her first collegiate goal in the 77th minute. Salisbury crossed to Meierbachtol who one-timed the ball past Viking reserve keeper Niki Brooks from six yards out. It was Salisbury’s first assist of the season.
Hume put in her second goal of the season after a short cross from Bosa in the 80th minute. Bosa, a senior from Mukilteo, Wash., was credited with her first career assist. Kari Evans capped the scoring in the 83rd minute off a corner sequence. Moore sent the ball into the box from the left corner. Meierbachtol flicked the ball towards the center of the goal box to Evans who tapped it home, putting Portland up 8-0.
Portland out-shot PSU 19-7, while taking seven corner kicks to the Vikings zero. Cori Alexander made five saves in 79:24 minutes, while sophomore reserve goalie Kim Head held the Vikings scoreless in the final 10 minutes.
“It’s nice to see the goals,” said Pilot coach Garrett Smith. “The game was a good combination of offense and defense. If you would have told me that we’d be 11-2 at this point in the season, I would have taken it in a heart beat. We’re playing well and we’re ready for the WCC season. We want to perform well and prove ourselves in a very tough conference.”
