San Bruno, Calif.-The 2003 WCC Women's Soccer All-Conference team is highlighted by nine first time First Team honorees. Santa Clara took home two individual awards as junior Leslie Osborne earned Player of the Year honors, while teammate Lauren Zealear was named Freshman of the Year. Six of the last seven Player of the Year awards have come from the Santa Clara campus. Zealear becomes the sixth SCU player to receive Freshman of the Year honors. The WCC Defensive Player of the Year went to Portland's Imani Dorsey. It is the second consecutive season and third time in four years a Pilot has earned the honor. Gonzaga's Shannon Stiles was selected by her peers as the WCC Coach of the Year after leading a much improved Bulldogs' squad to its best year in program history. Stiles is Gonzaga's first women's soccer WCC Coach of the Year as she led the Zags to an 11-8 record after a 6-13 mark a year ago.
All eight teams were well represented on the all-conference first and second teams. 2003 WCC champions, Santa Clara, placed five players among the top 22 vote getters, while Portland earned four. Bronco freshman Julie Ryder became the first freshman goalkeeper to garner First Team honors since 1997 (Angela Harrison, POR). Loyola Marymount's Laura Trask and Portland's Imani Dorsey became the eighth and ninth women's soccer players to earn first or second team all-conference honors four times. Santa Clara's Osborne, LMU's Shari Nishikawa, and Pepperdine's Lacey Ubaldi became the 10th, 11th, and 12th, three-time all-WCC selections in league history.
