The University of Portland men’s golf team finished in 13th place at the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate golf tournament in Kahuku, Hawaii. Pilot junior Mike McCabe and Pilot sophomore Kevin Beavers led the way for Portland by finishing in a tie for 38th place after firing a three-round total of 231 (+15). Both McCabe and Beavers fired an identical 77 (+5) in all three rounds of the tournament played at the par-72 Links at Turtle Bay.
South Carolina and host Hawaii were co-champions of the 18-team Turtle Bay Intercollegiate. Both schools boasted a team score of 891, four strokes better than third place Virginia. The Pilots had a team score of 930 after finishing with a total of 310 for all three rounds. South Carolina’s Robert Svensson was the overall individual winner by finishing with a 214 (-2). Svensson just beat out Coastal Carolina’s Alvaro Velasco who finished one stroke back.
Other Portland golfers include senior Justin Burwell who finished in a tie for 47th place after shooting a 232 (+16), senior Tony Peressini tied for 62nd place with a 236 (+20) and redshirt freshman Jake Easterly who shot a 240 (+24) and finished in a tie for 74th place.
The Turtle Bay Intercollegiate was the last event of the fall season for the Pilots who don’t hit the course again until the UC Riverside-Braveheart Classic on Mar. 8-9, 2004.
