Laramie, Wyo.- Khalila O’Rielly-Williams recorded her third straight double-double with 15 points and a season-high 13 rebounds as Portland (4-4) handed Wyoming (1-6) a 59-43 defeat at Arena Auditorium. Whitney Grant and Jamie Medley each added season-highs of 12 points for the Pilots in the win.
The Pilots led from start to finish, running out to an 18-6 lead, capped by a Medley 3-pointer at the 11:13 mark in the first half. O’Rielly-Williams scored six points to spark the fast start.
Sophomore guard Whitney Grant scored 10 first half points, knocking down four of her six shot attempts, including two treys. O’Rielly-Williams gave Portland the rebounding edge with six boards in the period. The Pilots took a 26-20 lead at the break, scoring 10 second chance points in the period, while limiting the Cowgirls to zero.
Wyoming regrouped and scored the first five points of the second half as Michelle Lieber hit two free throws and Kristen Lenhardt sank a three. O’Rielly-Williams answered with a lay-up that began a 10-0 Pilot run that would see her and Medley score all 10 points.
The Cowgirls closed the gap to 38-33 with 10:29 remaining, but the Pilots gradually increased the lead as the game wound down. Portland shot 44 percent (24-54) from the field, while Wyoming was held to just 24 percent (12-51).
The Pilots outscored Wyoming 20-8 in the paint, 18-11 off turnovers and 14-6 on second chance opportunities. Portland held a 39-36 rebound advantage and swiped 11 steals to the Cowgirls’ five.
O’Rielly-Williams finished 7-of-12 from the field for 15 points to go with 13 rebounds and two steals. Grant added 12 points and four assists, while Medley chipped in season highs of 12 points and seven rebounds.
Ashley Elliott was the only Cowgirl in double figures finishing with 20 points, but shot only 5-for-18 from the floor.
The Pilots continue their road trip at the Air Force Academy on Sun., Dec. 21 at 2:00 p.m. (MT).
