PORTLAND, Ore.- The Portland Pilots shook off their early season rust to put on a clinic Thursday night at the Chiles Center as the Pilots roughed up the 20th ranked Oregon Ducks, 76-58. Portland (2-2) spread the wealth as four Pilots finished the game with double figure points, led by senior Khalila O’Rielly Williams’ who netted 17. The Pilots out-ran, out-muscled and out-shot the seemingly overly matched Ducks (5-1).
The Pilots started the game clicking on all cylinders. After Cecily O’Rielly-Williams tied the game at 5-5 with a free throw, the Pilots peeled off the next 13 points to take a 18-5 lead, seven minutes into the game. Hanna Seltzer hit two three pointers during the run and finished the half with 10 points, the only player from either team to reach double figures in the half.
Portland wasn’t finished. They continued to go right at the Ducks as both Khalila O’Rielly-Williams and Amy Botto scored from point-blank range as the Pilots built a 31-14 lead at 7:10. Whitney Grant was dishing the ball left and right and finished the half with three assists. The Pilots racked up 12 assists as a team, while the Ducks recorded only four.
Khalila O’Rielly-Williams gave Portland it’s biggest lead with a lay-up to make it 40-21 at 2:06. The Pilots seemed to shake the turnover-bug that has plagued them thus far this season. Portland led 42-27 at the break and had only eight turnovers. Oregon gave the ball up 14 times in the first half alone.
Oregon came out of the locker room with a sense of urgency in the second half. Brandi Davis hit a pair of outside shots as the Ducks pulled within 13 points, but that was as close as they would get. The Pilots went inside and out during a 14-4 run that gave UP it’s biggest lead of the game at 63-38 with ten minutes to play. During the run, Ashlee Orndorff and Amy Botto both connected from long-range, while Lauren Himmelspach and Rene’e Evans both converted from close up.
The Pilots sailed home from there and when the final horn sounded, Portland had it’s second win over the Ducks in three years, and Oregon had it’s first loss of the season.
“This is a great win for our program and it was a total team effort,” Pilot head coach Jim Sollars said. “Our guards did a great job of taking care of the basketball.”
Portland turned the ball over only 15 times on the night, seven shy of the 22 the Pilots are averaging this season. Portland also played unselfishly, dishing out 19 assists. The Pilots had it going on both sides of the ball as they played stifling defense, holding the Ducks to 34.5 percent shooting on the night. The Ducks also turned the ball over 23 times.
Portland shot 51 percent from the field as Khalila O’Rielly-Williams’ 17 points led all scorers. She also pulled down five rebounds. Ashlee Orndorff and Hanna Seltzer both finished with 13 points, while Jamie Medley scored 10. Corrie Mizusawa was the only Oregon player in double figures as she put up 12 points on the night. The Ducks out-rebounded the Pilots 34-30, but Portland out-scored Oregon in the paint, 28-22.
Next up for Portland is a trip across town to face the Portland State Vikings in the RiverCity Rivalry. The Pilots and Vikings meet on Sat., Dec. 6 at 2:00 p.m. at the Stott Center on the PSU campus.
