Jason Keep made two free throws with 26 seconds left Saturday to give San Diego a 78-77 win at Portland, capping a second-half comeback for the Toreros. Keep scored 17 of his game-high 22 points in the second half. San Diego improved to 10-9 overall, 4-2 in WCC games, while Portland dropped to 9-11 overall, 2-5 in the WCC.
Portland had forged a 74-67 lead on Karl Aaker’s jumper with 4:02 to play in the game, led 75-70 at 3:34, and 77-76 with 46 seconds left after Donald Wilson’s drive down the lane, but Keep got to the free throw line 20 seconds later and made both free throws for a 78-77 San Diego lead.
Casey Frandsen, who scored 13 of his team-high 18 points in the second for Portland, had a baseline jumper partially blocked, but Dustin Geddis got the rebound and called timeout with nine seconds left on the clock. After the break, Portland got the ball to Geddis at the top of the key, but his 3-pointer rimmed out just before the buzzer.
San Diego was 17-of-23 from the field in the second half - Keep was 5-of-6 - but the Toreros won the game at the free throw line from an unlikely subject. Keep came into the game shooting 66% at the line, but hit 8-of-11 attempts, including the game-winners. The Toreros were 22-of-30 in the game, offsetting Portland’s 19-of-22 performance at the stripe.
Keep also had a game-high eight rebounds, while Nick Lewis added 18 points and five rebounds off the bench.
Frandsen hit a trio of 3-pointers among his 18 points, and was supported by 13 points from Aaker and Wilson, and 11 points from Dustin Geddis. Adam Quick’s 11 assists were one off his career high.
Portland nailed down 49% of its field goal attempts and forced 20 San Diego turnovers, but were out-rebounded 32-19.
After spotting San Diego a quick 2-0 lead, the Pilots ripped off an 18-7 run, topped off on a Frandsen 3-pointer after Eugene Jeter had stripped the ball under the San Diego basket to start a fast break.
Geddis then took over for Portland, scoring seven of the Pilots’ next 10 points, hitting a pair of jumpers and 3-pointer to push Portland out to a 28-15 lead with 8:40 left in the half. The Pilots kept the lead outside 10 points until San Diego’s Nick Lewis hit a 3-pointer with 17 seconds left, leaving Portland with a 34-27 halftime lead.
Geddis was 5-of-9 from the field in the first half for 11 points, and also had four rebounds. Eric Knight scored a season-high five points in the first half. Portland’s defense forced 13 San Diego turnovers in the first 20 minutes, resulting in 16 Portland points.
The Pilots also kept Keep, the league’s leading scorer, to just five points in the first half.
