Darrell Tucker and Alvin Broussard combined for 40 points Thursday, handing Portland a 72-55 loss in West Coast Conference basketball. Tucker scored 15 of his game-high 23 points in the first half, while Broussard had nine of his 17 points in the second half.
Portland dropped to 9-14 with the loss, 2-8 in WCC games, while San Francisco moved to 6-3 in the WCC, and evened its overall record to 11-11.
Portland trailed 40-34 before San Francisco ripped off a 12-3 run to kick its lead to 52-37, then Darrell Tucker hit a pair of free throws and a 3-pointer sandwiched around a Donald Wilson 3-pointer, and San Francisco led 55-40.
Alvin Broussard’s old-fashioned 3-point play with 6:41 left resulted in a 60-44 Dons lead, effectively ending the game.
Tucker’s 15 points off the bench helped stake the Dons to a 35-28 halftime lead, but it took an 8-2 San Francisco run over the last 3:50 of the half to provide the cushion.
San Francisco took a 21-12 lead, but Portland rallied with its own 14-6 run to get back within 27-26. Karl Aaker and Adam Quick hit consecutive 3-pointers to start the run, and after Tucker hit a 3-pointer to kick the lead to 27-22, Quick and Eugene hit jumpers, getting the lead down to 27-26.
Portland started the half just 4-of-13 from the field, but made six of its last 10 shots from the field to finish the half at 43.5%. San Francisco, meanwhile, shot 55% from the field – including five 3-pointers – and out-rebounded the Pilots 18-8 in the first 20 minutes.
Quick had 10 points to lead Portland in the first half, and Donald Wilson added five.
