SPOKANE – Portland was perfect on six free throw attempts in the final 15 seconds Wednesday, upsetting Gonzaga 72-68 to snap a 14-game losing skid against the Bulldogs. The win also stopped Gonzaga’s 21-game home winning streak in West Coast Conference games, and halted Portland's current five-game losing streak.
Portland improved to 10-15 overall, 3-9 in WCC games, while Gonzaga fell to 19-7, 10-2 in the WCC. The loss was also the first time since 1995 that Gonzaga had lost two home games in a season, and was Portland’s first win in Spokane since an 84-68 victory in 1990.
The Pilots never trailed in the game, and led by as many as 16 points in both halves. The Pilots took a 60-44 lead with 7:59 left after Adam Quick drained a pair of free throws, the result of a technical whistled when Gonzaga head coach Mark Few got rambunctious on the sideline.
Blake Stepp – who scored just two points in the first half – then scored nine points in a Gonzaga surge which cut the Portland lead down to 64-61 with less than two minutes left. The 17-4 run was also carried by Ronny Turiaf’s seven points, capped with a dunk.
Eugene Jeter, who topped Portland with 18 points – 10 in the second half – responded with a drive down the middle, and after Cory Violette’s rebound bucket made the score 66-63, Jeter hit a pair of free throws with 15 seconds left for a five-point lead.
Donald Wilson and Quick sandwiched four free throws around another Violette rebound basket, and a Stepp 3-pointer to keep Portland’s upset intact. Quick’s free throws came with two seconds remaining.
Quick finished with 14 points and Wilson 13, while Dustin Geddis added nine points and eight rebounds. Turiaf’s 29 points and 14 rebounds were game highs for Gonzaga, while Stepp added 17. Violette grabbed 10 rebounds and scored nine points.
Portland improved to 7-1 this season when leading at halftime, and finished the game shooting 49% from the field (24-49), and 84.2% (16-19) at the free throw line. Gonzaga shot a miserable 33.9% from the field (19-56), as Kyle Bankhead (1-6), Violette (3-10), and Stepp (4-14), combined to shoot 8-of-30. The Bulldogs did make 24-of-30 free throw attempts.
Portland edged ahead early in the first half, taking advantage of Gonzaga’s shooting problems, forging a 15-5 lead at 14:18. After Gonzaga crawled within 21-15, Donald Wilson keyed a 10-0 Pilot run with seven points, capped by a deep 3-pointer at 5:41 for a 31-15 lead.
Held to three points in a five-minute span, the Bulldogs responded with their own 11-0 run, fueled by six straight points from Ronny Turiaf. Turiaf’s steal and dunk ignited the run, and he followed with a hook and a garbage rebound. A pair of Blake Stepp free throws – his only points of the first half, pulled the ‘Zags within 31-26, but Eugene Jeter’s 3-pointer stopped the threat.
After an acrobatic hanging jumper from Wilson gave Portland a 36-26 lead with :30 seconds remaining, Turiaf dunked to provide the halftime score. Portland was 14-of-25 from the field in the first half (56%), and out-rebounded the Bulldogs 18-16. Gonzaga, meanwhile, was just 10-of-33 from the field (30.3%), but made 7-of-9 free throw attempts.
