Portland, OR - The University of Portland women’s basketball team shot a season-low 24 percent from the field as the Gonzaga Bulldogs went on to win, 64-50 on Sat., Feb. 22 at the Chiles Center. Portland falls to 10-15 overall, 4-8 in WCC Play. Gonzaga improves to 16-11 on the season and 7-5 in the WCC.
Sophomore Jamie Medley scored the first points of the game, with a three-point play, the old fashioned way. Portland built a 21-16 lead midway through the first half, but the Zags wouldn’t quit and pulled ahead on a jumper by Triana Allen, for a 29-27 halftime lead. Ashley Burke tallied 18 points for Gonzaga in the first half and teammate Anne Bailey grabbed 12 boards before the break.
After the break, Gonzaga capitalized on its duo of Burke and Bailey. Burke ended the night with a career-high 29 points, while Bailey racked up 20 rebounds. Portland just couldn’t execute down the stretch and Gonzaga went on to win, 64-50.
The Bulldogs totaled 32 points in the paint and out-rebounded the Pilots, 48-29. Portland scored 24 points off Gonzaga turnovers and 12 points from its bench in the game.
Medley scored a career-high 15 points on 3-of-7 shooting from the field, 1-of-3 shooting from behind the arc and an impressive 8-of-9 from the free-throw line. Ashlee Giles added 10 points in the effort. For the game, Portland shot 14-of-58 (24 percent) from the floor, 5-of-23 (22 percent) from three-point range, 17-of-20 (85 percent) from the charity stripe.
Burke went 10-of-15 from the field and 9-of-11 from the free-throw line for 29 points and teammate Triana Allen added 13 points for Gonzaga.
“You have to take good shots to be successful down the stretch,” said Head Coach Jim Sollars. “We forced shots and didn’t execute well tonight. We got out-rebounded and had a bad shooting night. We’ll put this one behind us and move forward.”
UP NEXT: Portland will host San Diego on Thurs., Feb. 27 at 7:00 p.m. The Pilots will host the Santa Clara Broncos at 7:00 p.m. on Sat., Mar. 1 in Portland, OR. From Thurs.-Sat., Mar. 6-9, Portland will compete for the WCC Tournament crown in San Diego, CA.
