SAN DIEGO – San Diego steam-rolled Portland with interior scoring Thursday, sending the Pilots out with a 92-69 loss in WCC play. The bruising USD trio of Jason Blair (24), Jason Keep (23) and Nick Lewis (10), combined for 57 points, and guard Roy Morris added 17 points. San Diego improved to 16-10 overall, 10-3 in WCC games; Portland dropped to 10-16, 3-10 in WCC games.
Casey Frandsen led Portland with 19 points, and broke the all-time 3-point records with a trio of treys in five attempts. Frandsen now has 157 career 3-pointers, and 416 attempts. Dustin Geddis added 14 points in the loss, while Eugene Jeter had 12 points.
A 41-25 San Diego halftime lead exploded into 56-27 just 4:02 into the second half, fueled by seven Keep points and a pair of Morris 3-pointers. Portland, which had suffered a 78-77 loss to San Diego earlier this season in Portland, shot 41.4% from the field (47% in the second half), but got out-rebounded 41-26 and allowed San Diego to shoot 58.2% from the field (32-55).
Blair scored 13 points in the first half, including eight straight points which extended San Diego’s lead to 33-14 at 5:59. Portland had taken an 8-6 lead on a Dustin Geddis dunk at 15:55, but the Toreros outscored the Pilots 33-6 over the next 13 minutes.
San Diego hit 10 of its first 14 field goals, and had runs of 10, nine and 10 points, building up a 22-point lead – meanwhile, Portland was just 9-of-26 from the field in the first 20 minutes, often having difficulty getting into its offensive sets. The Pilots had an 8-0 run in the final 1:45 of the first half to get within 39-25, but threw a ball away at midcourt, resulting in a San Diego layup at the buzzer.
Blair, Jason Keep and Nick Lewis – San Diego’s trio of inside players – combined for 29 points and 16 rebounds in the first half, offsetting 11 Torero turnovers.
