Portland, Ore. — The University of Portland men’s tennis team swept in-state rival Portland State, 7-0 at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center on Wed., Feb. 5. With the win, Portland improves to 3-1 overall. Portland State drops to 1-5 on the season.

The Pilots did not lose more then four games in any match they played today against the Vikings. The match started with the Pilots winning 24 of the 26 doubles games they played. And concluded with straight set wins at every singles position. UP did it with out their top player, Peter Malacek in the singles line-up.

“I thought we had a pretty dominating performance today,” said Head Coach Aaron Gross. “Our goal was to keep a high level of play throughout the match and I think we accomplished that. We had to discipline ourselves mentally today to keep focused throughout, especially once the outcome seemed certain.”

The Pilot duo of Borchard & Malacek dominated Portland State’s Smith & Haselwood in the No. 1 position, 8-1. In the No. 2 position Ty Garrison & James Redpath clinched the doubles point with an 8-1 win over Simpson & Gillam . UP’s Ty Garrison & Redpath recorded an impressive 8-0 win in the No. 3 position.

In singles play, Roman Borvanov, who played in the No. 1 position, defeated Beau Smith, 6-3, 6-1. In the No. 2 position Quinn Borchard beat Kapil Desai, 6-0, 6-3, while teammate Ram Hernandez recorded the win against Mark Simpson, 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 3 spot. James Redpath, Ty Garrison and Colby Jager collected wins in the No. 4, 5 and 6 positions.

On Fri., Mar. 7, the Pilots open WCC play against Santa Clara at 1:00 p.m. in Portland, OR. On Fri., Mar. 14, Portland heads to Irvine, CA to match-up with UC Irvine at 1:00 p.m.
