Loyola Marymount converted 23 second-half free throws Thursday, going on to an 86-71 win over Portland. The Lions (8-15/2-6), were 23-of-27 in the second half from the free throw line, finishing the game 31-of-42 for the game. Portland fell to 9-12, 2-6 in WCC games and into a tie with the Lions.
Andy Osborn had 19 points to lead LMU, while Brandon Worthy added 14 points, Chris Ayer 13, Keith Kincade 12, and Charles Brown 11.
Dustin Geddis led all scorers with a career-high 24 points, Adam Quick added 18 points, and Donald Wilson 11. Casey Frandsen was held to six points in the loss.
Geddis hit 10 of 14 field goal attempts, while Quick was 6-of-6 – 4-4 on 3-pointers – and made his only two free throw attempts. Wilson was 5-of-11, leaving the rest of the team just 3-of-22 from the field.
Trailing 39-28 at halftime, the Pilots charged back into the game, and trailed 63-61 after Charles Brown hit a free throw for LMU. The next trip down the court, Geddis was whistled for his fourth foul on a rebound, then was hit with a technical – fouling out Portland’s lone post threat of the night.
After Worthy hit all four free throws, the Lions outscored the Pilots 23-10 in the final 6:24 of the game. Patrick Galos hit two free throws for Portland at 3:50 to make the score 73-67, but the game was effectively over as the Lions beat a path to the free throw line.
The Lions closed out the first half with a 7-2 run, the third decisive run of the half for Loyola Marymount. LMU had started the game with a 10-0 edge, but after Portland roared back with its own 19-8 run to take a 19-8 lead, the Lions took control behind Osborn.
Osborn scored five straight points for a 25-21 LMU lead, and after Wes Wardrop added a 3-pointer, LMU had a 28-21 lead. A Dustin Geddis free throw stopped that 8-0 LMU run, and though the Pilots got back within six points when Ghislain Sema knocked down a pair of free throws, only a Geddis baseline jumper interrupted Loyola Marymount’s 7-2 run to close the half.
LMU was 14-of-27 from the field in the first half, topped by Osborn’s 16 points. Geddis led Portland with 13 points, and Wilson added six points. Portland was hurt by 8-of-15 free throw shooting and six turnovers in the first half, while leading scorer Casey Frandsen attempted only two field goals.
Portland shot 45% from the field and hit seven 3-pointers, but were just 16-of-28 at the free throw line, and were out-rebounded 39-27. LMU shot 51% from the field (26-51), but were only 3-of-11 on 3-pointers.
