Pepperdine’s balance overwhelmed Portland Saturday in an 82-62 win over the Pilots. Jimmy Miggins scored 17 points to lead five Waves in double figures, as Pepperdine (12-10/4-5) halted a three-game losing streak. Portland slipped to 9-13 overall, 2-7 in WCC games.
Trailing 45-31 at halftime, Portland outscored the Waves 7-1 in the first two minutes of the second half, getting within 46-38. Miggins and Terrance Johnson (14 points), keyed a 23-9 Pepperdine run to kick the game out of reach, however, combining for 15 points in the run.
The Pilots got within 57-42, but Johnson hit a 3-pointer and a dunk following an Alex Acker jumper and Miggins dunk to push the lead back to 66-44 with 11 minutes left. Adam Quick sandwiched a pair of 3-pointers around a Mike Westphal 3-pointer, but Pepperdine maintained its comfortable lead.
Donald Wilson’s 13 points led Portland, while Quick and Jeter scored 12 each for Portland. Portland starters Karl Aaker, Casey Frandsen and Dustin Geddis combined for nine points. The Pilots improved to 38.5% from the field in the second half after just 29% in the first half.
The Waves out-rebounded the Pilots just 35-31, but the Pilots had seven shots blocked and committed 12 turnovers.
Miggins scored Pepperdine’s last seven points of the first half in an 11-4 Waves run, leading to a 45-31 halftime score. After spotting Pepperdine leads of 10-0 and 14-3, the Pilots rambled back into the game with 3-point shooting – indeed, Portland’s first four field goals were 3-pointers – and after Eugene Jeter went coast-to-coast for a three-point play, the Pilots trailed just 18-17 with 11:39 to play.
A 10-2 run put the Waves back up 28-19, and the Pilots whittled the deficit down to seven points after Patrick Galos drained a jumper at 34-27, but Miggins came alive with his seven points. Miggins scored three points to cap a 7-0 run, and after Galos hit a pair of free throws and converted a tip-in rebound, Miggins hit a pair of jumpers to end the half.
Portland was 10-of-34 from the field in the first half, but made all seven free throws.
