Portland, Ore. — The Oregon State Beavers rallied for nine runs in the third inning and never looked back on their way to a 13-6 win over the University of Portland Pilots on Sat., Mar. 8 at Pilot Stadium. Portland drops to 3-9 overall, while Oregon State improves to 8-7.
The Pilots jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a two out double by Kory Casto. OSU responded in the second with an unearned run to tie the game at 1-1. Portland regained the early lead with an RBI single by Nik Kosach in the bottom half of the inning only to see the Beavers run away with a barrage of runs in the third.
OSU brought 13 men to the plate and scored nine runs in the third. The first six batters of the inning reached base for the Beavers off Portland starter Andrew Renyer. Seth Pietsch had an RBI single and a two run triple, while Scott Nelson and Chris Kunda both had two RBI in the inning. Pilot pitchers combined to give up eight hits to the Beavers in the third.
Portland was never able to overcome the deficit despite only being out-hit by a margin of one (14-13). The Pilots were inefficient and hit into four double plays for the game while committing three errors. Portland scored six runs on 13 hits and left 11 on base for the game.
Gustaf Little provided Portland with a boost in the leadoff spot going 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI. Casto had another solid day at the plate with three hits and one RBI. Kosach, Brock Griffin, and Trevor Hahn each had two hits for the Pilots as well. Renyer took the loss for the Portland (2-2), giving up seven earned runs off eight hits in 2.1 innings.
Oregon State tallied 13 runs on 14 hits while leaving 10 on base. Pietsch was 3-of-5 on the day with two runs and three RBI. Nelson also drove in three while going 2-for-3 and scoring twice. Jacoby Ellsbury racked up three hits in the game for the Beavers. Kurt Steele pitched a solid four innings of relief to pick his first win of the year.
