Portland, Ore. — The University of Portland baseball team lost to Oregon State University 14-4 Tues., Apr. 22 at Pilot Stadium. Portland moves to 8-30-1 overall, 4-14-1 in the WCC. Oregon State improves to 18-19 overall.
Both starters pitched well to begin the game as neither team had a hit in the first three innings. OSU’s Seth Pietsch put the Beavers on the board first with a leadoff home run in the fourth inning to deep left center field off Pilot starter Josh Roberts. After getting the next two batters out, Tony Calderon hit a double to left center. Calderon later scored on a Paul Richie singled to give the Beavers a 2-0 lead.
The Pilots evened the score in the fifth with a two-out rally against Beaver’s starter Kenny Anderson. Mike McRae doubled and scored on a Ryan Heil single. Pat Geraghty, who was hit by a pitch, later scored when Tyler Perkins reached base on a throwing error by OSU.
Roberts was pitching well for Portland but ran into trouble in the sixth inning. The first eight batters of the inning had base hits, Daniel Knox then relieved Roberts but the Beavers continued to produce against the Pilots. OSU finished the inning with nine runs (six earned), on 10 hits and committed two errors. Richie had two doubles and three RBI in the inning.
Oregon State put three more runs on the board in the ninth with the final run coming on a Calderon RBI double. Portland came back with two runs of their own in the ninth, both unearned.
Roberts (0-7) went 5.0 innings giving up 10 runs, eight earned, on 13 hits and struck out three. Prior to the sixth inning, Roberts was solid, only giving up the two runs and recording all three of his strikeouts. Anderson (2-3) picked up the win for the Beavers going 5.0 innings. He yielded two runs on two hits, walked one and struck out four. Knox pitched the final four innings for the Pilots.
For the Beavers, Richie went 4-for-5 with a run scored, three doubles and four runs driven in. Calderon also had four hits with two runs and an RBI. Pietsch was 3-for-5, scored twice, hit a home run and had two RBI.
Joe Watson had two hits for the Pilots, including his sixth double of the season. Ryan Heil was 1-for-3 with a run and one RBI. Kory Casto had another RBI giving him a team-best 34 for the season.
UP NEXT: The Pilots hit the road with a three-game WCC series against Pepperdine in Malibu, Calif., Apr. 25-27. Portland then heads to San Francisco for another WCC series with USF Fri.-Sat., May 2-3, the three-game series concludes with a Sat. doubleheader. After two road games at Washington Tues.-Wed., May 6-7, the Pilots head back home for a three-game series against WCC rival San Diego Fri.-Sun., May 9-11. Portland finishes the year on the road facing WCC opponent Loyola Marymount Fri.-Sun. May 16-18 in Los Angeles, Calif.
