Corvallis, Ore. — The University of Portland baseball team dropped a 10-1 decision to the Oregon State University Beavers on Tue., Apr. 8 at Goss Stadium. The Pilots fall to 8-24 overall, 4-8 in West Coast Conference play. Oregon State improves to 15-15 overall.
Oregon State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a wild pitch by Joe Jones. Chris Biles doubled to left centerfield, scoring Seth Pietsch for the 2-0 lead.
Oregon State pitcher Jake Postlewait didn’t allow a baserunner until the fourth inning, walking Ryan Heil on a full-count pitch with one out. An out later, he surrendered his only hit when Travis Vetters singled to right.
Oregon State made it 5-0 on Aaron Mathews’ three-run homer to leftfield with two out in the bottom of the fourth against Pilot starter Joe Jones. Starting the sixth inning, Tyler Perkins, nailed a double into left-centerfield off OSU relief pitcher Mike Ekstrom. Perkins eventually scored on Kory Casto’s infield single, giving the Pilots their only run of the game.
The Beavers would score three more times for a 10-1 win.
Joe Jones and Daniel Knox split time on the mound for the Pilots. Jones (0-1) recorded the loss after tossing four innings. He gave up four hits, six walks, six runs and struck out three in 23 batters faced. Knox pitched four innings and gave up six hits, four runs and one walk for the game.
Portland was held to just five hits and stranded four base runners. Kory Casto picked up one hit and an RBI, while teammates Ryan Heil, Travis Vetters, Joe Watson and Tyler Perkins had one hit each for the game.
The Beavers tallied 10 hits and 10 runs in 33 at bats. Jake Postlewait picked up the win for Oregon State, he improves to 2-0 on the season.
