OMAHA, Neb.- The University of Portland men’s soccer team was defeated, 2-1 on Sun., Sept. 14 at the Ameritas Classic by host Creighton. Matt Jewett and Matt Wieland scored the goals for Creighton, while Pilot senior Jarrod Weis knocked in his first score of the season in the losing effort. Portland falls to 3-3-0 overall, while the Bluejays move to 2-2-2.
Jewett got the scoring started when he nailed a long-range bomb into the top right of the net in the 47th minute of play. Damien Westfield, coming off an injury, assisted Jewett¹s first tally of the year.
Just minutes later, the Bluejays used their first corner kick of the day to produce their second goal. David Wagenfuhr sent the corner kick in front, where Wieland was able to knock a header into the net for his first career goal at 48:57.
The Pilots found some light in the 75th minute, when Weis rocketed a shot from 22 yards out, past a diving Guido Leon for the lone Portland goal.
Creighton had 13-of-20 shots on goal, while Portland put 5-of-14 shots on goal. Pilot keeper Luis Robles made 11 saves, while Bluejay goalie Guido Leon made only four to register the win.
“We gave up the two quick goals after the half which put us in a bind,” said Pilot coach Bill Irwin. “We came back with a good goal to get us within one and had a few more chances, but couldn’t get the goal.”
Chris Sanders led the Pilots with five shots and earned a spot on the all-Tournament team along with teammate Josh Simpson. UNLV won the Ameritas Classic after defeating Southwest Missouri State in the early game.
UP NEXT: After road games at ranked Cal State Fullerton and UCLA, Portland heads north to the Husky Classic to play Kentucky and South Carolina. The conference schedule starts on the road at Gonzaga on Sat., Oct. 4.
