SEATTLE, Wash.- Jennifer Tuttle and Wanda Rozwadowska each scored first half goals as the Portland women beat No. 6 Texas, 2-0 at the Husky/Nike Invitational. Tuttle’s strike in the third minute proved to be the game-winner as the Pilots improve to 5-2-0 overall, while the Longhorns drop to 4-3-0.
Tuttle, a freshman making her second start of the season, ran on a long diagonal pass from Pilot junior defender Kristen Rogers. Tuttle slipped past the Texas defense before blasting a 10 yard shot inside the left post past Longhorn keeper Dana Hall. Rogers tallied her second assist of the season on Tuttle’s third game-winner in just seven contests.
Defensively, Texas prevented Portland from getting off many shots by pushing the back line forward and invoking an offsides trap. The Pilots were called offsides seven times in the match.
Rozwadowska took advantage of the defensive scheme in the 32nd minute scoring an unassisted goal, her third strike in the last four games. After getting behind the Longhorn defense, Rozwadowska was one-on-one with Hall and neatly tapped in the finish to the far post to put the Pilots ahead 2-0.
After halftime, the flow of the game changed dramatically as Texas took off one defender and pushed the offense forward aggressively. The Longhorns ran off 11 shots to Portland’s two in the second period, but failed to find the net. Pilot freshman goalkeeper Cori Alexander made 10 crucial saves in recording her fifth shutout of the season.
Pilot coach Garrett Smith was impressed with how his team responded to the changes in the second half.
“This was another great game that gives us good experience,” said Smith. “We showed lots of composure throughout, staying patient and making some timely scores early-on, then settling back into a solid defensive effort later. They put the pressure on us in the second half and our defense responded. To do that much defending and not give up a score was phenomenal.”
Texas had a 20-8 shot advantage for the game putting 10 shots on goal. Four of the eight Pilot shot attempts were on goal. Texas had eight corner kicks, Portland managed two. Longhorn junior Kelly McDonald led the team with 10 shots, six being on goal. Two of Rozwadowska three shots were on frame.
“This was a great performance and gives us something to build on,” noted Smith. “So far this year, we’ve struggled in the second game of each weekend, which is something we must improve on. Sunday, we need to come out and play the way we’re capable of and finish the weekend on a winning note.”
