COLOMBUS, Ohio- The University of Portland’s Christine Sinclair scored Canada’s only goal in a 4-1 loss to Germany on Saturday, Sept. 20 in their opening game of the 2003 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The Canadians will face Argentina in their second game in Group C play on Wednesday, September 24 at 8:30 p.m. in Columbus.
Canada got off to a dream start when Sinclair opened the scoring in the 3rd minute with a header off a Kristina Kiss free kick. Kiss hit a deep ball to the far post where Sinclair rose to hit a powerful header across the goal and past German goalkeeper Silke Rottenberg.
Germany then rattled off four unanswered goals to put the Canadians away.
WASHINGTON D.C.- The United States beat Sweden, 3-1 at RFK Stadium. Mia Hamm assisted on all three goals to give the U.S. the victory. Kristine Lilly, Cindy Parlow and Shannon Boxx notched the scores for the U.S.
Former Pilot Tiffeny Milbrett entered the action in the 56th minute with the U.S. holding a 2-1 lead. Milbrett is only two goals shy of becoming the fifth player in the history of soccer to score 100 international goals. Milbrett, who debuted for the USA in 1991, has 98 career goals and with just two more would join Mia Hamm (142 goals), Elisabetta Vignotto (107), Michelle Akers (105) and Carolina Morace (105) in one of international soccer’s most exclusive clubs.
