SEATTLE, Wash.- Pilot freshman Lisa Sari tallied the only goal and the defense limited Fresno State to five shots in Portland’s 1-0 win at the Husky/Nike Invitational. The Pilots jump to 6-2-0 overall, while the Bulldogs fall to 3-4-2. Senior defender Imani Dorsey was named the tournament’s Defensive MPV, as the Pilots finished in second place. Washington claimed the championship after beating Texas, 3-1 in the late game.
Sari, from Mark Morris High School in Longview, Wash., put in a 12 yard header to the far post off a corner kick in the 52nd minute. Sophomore Lindsey Huie bent in a perfect ball straight to Sari who deposited her third goal of the season past Bulldog keeper Jeannette Paine. Huie now has four assists on the season to lead the Pilots.
“We came here and did what we planned to do by getting two wins,” said Pilot coach Garrett Smith. “Today was our game, we played well and finally put one in just after the half.”
Portland dominated the game, racking up 18 shots to only five for Fresno State. The Pilots had eight shots on goal, the Bulldogs only one.
Despite not scoring in the first half, Portland outshot Fresno State, 12-1 setting the tone of the game early with good scoring chances. Freshman defender Stephanie Lopez header off Huie’s first corner kick went off the crossbar in the 15th minute.
The Pilots played a control game and possessed the ball on the Bulldog side of the field a majority of the match. Fresno State played very defensive, but had to adjust after Sari’s goal and could not come up with many scoring threats.
Seven players attempted at least two shots for Portland. Pilot goalie Cori Alexander had to make only one save in earning her sixth shutout of the season. Paine made seven saves in the Bulldog net.
Pilot freshmen Angie Woznuk and Jennifer Tuttle sat out the contest with minor injuries. Both are expected to be ready to play next weekend.
“Getting two shutouts this weekend is a great feeling,” said Smith. “Especially in the absence of two key players today.”
