CORVALLIS, Ore.- The University of Portland men’s golf team finished eighth at the Northwest Collegiate Classic hosted by Oregon State at the Trysting Tree Golf Club. Junior Mike McCabe earned a top-10 finish, while sophomore Kevin Beavers had his first top-20 finish.
The Pilots shot a final round 290 to finish the tournament at 9-over par, good for eighth place out of the 12 competing schools. Portland was consistent as a team shooting a 290 in the first round, 293 for the second and finishing back at 290 in the final round.
UC-Irvine took the title with a team score of 846 (-18), besting second place Long Beach State by 15 strokes. Cal Poly’s Travis Bertoni won the individual title with a 204 (-12).
McCabe has his second top-10 finish in two competitions after carding a 214 (-2) and tying for 10th place. The score bettered his previous career-best, set last weekend, by one stroke. Beavers tied for 20th after a final round 70. His 54-hole 217 (+1) also is a career best.
Pilot senior Tony Peressini shot a final round even par 72 to tie for 38th with a 221 (+5). Senior Justin Burwell shot a 223 (+7), good for a tie in 46th place, and Pilot redshirt freshman Jake Easterly finished tied for 50th with a 224 (+8).
Consistency was the norm for Portland as not one player shot higher than a 76 in a single round. Portland freshman John Marty, an individual entrant who shot a first round 68, finished tied for 59th with a 228 (+12).
