San Jose, Calif.- The University of Portland women’s soccer team had four separate players score goals as they cruised to an easy 4-0 win over San Jose State. The Pilots improve to 3-1-0 on the season, while the Spartans drop to 1-3-0.
Portland took a 1-0 lead into halftime after freshman Elsa Hume scored her first collegiate goal in the 27th minute, but the Pilots were sluggish in the first half.
“It was a very slow start for our team,” said Pilot coach Garrett Smith. “Once again, I think the inexperience factor caught up with us a bit in the first half and we had to regroup at halftime. Luckily, Elsa provided us with a spark that carried over into the second half.
“This is just another piece in our puzzle, another lesson learned,” Smith noted. “We’ve got to show up to play every day, from start to finish. You have to finish a team off early when the chance is there and we didn’t do that today. Fortunately, the second half was day-and-night compared to the first. We came out and played very well, getting lots of good opportunities.”
The Pilots dominated the second half outshooting the Spartans 10-1. Sophomore Lindsey Huie scored her second goal of the season in the 55th minute, while senior Wanda Rozwadowska (59th minute) and freshman Kari Evans (83rd minute) capped off the scoring with their first goals of 2003.
Portland consistently found ways to get behind the Spartan defense, while not allowing San Jose State’s offense to be a factor. Pilot keeper Cori Alexander made one save in recording the shutout.
The game was cleanly played with only 13 fouls called on both teams combined. Portland had 19 shots, to SJSU’s two, while getting four corner kicks and not allowing the Spartans any.
“Anytime you can go on the road and come away with two wins it’s a good result,” said junior defender Kristen Rogers. “Each game, our team is getting more experienced and comfortable with each other, we’ve just got to keep it going.”
Lisa Sari and Huie assisted on Hume’s first half goal. Jennifer Tuttle and Kristen Moore also tallied assists for the Pilots who return home to host the NIKE Invitational next weekend.
“I know the girls can’t wait to get back and play at home,” Smith said. “We have two tough games coming up with Fullerton and Connecticut, it should be a very exciting weekend.”
UP NEXT: The Pilots home opener will be as the host of the NIKE Portland Invitational on the weekend of Sept. 13-14. Portland plays CS-Fullerton on Sat., Sept. 13 before concluding the tournament against Connecticut on Sun., Sept. 14. Both start times are set for 2:15 p.m.
