KAHUKU, Hawai’i – The Portland men’s golf team shot a first round 299 (+11) on Monday and currently sit in a tie for 11th place among the 19-team field at the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate. Freshman Joel Johnson fired an even-par 72 and is tied for 11th individually, while sophomore Luke Easterly is tied for 24th at 1-over par 73. The first of three rounds was played at the par 72, 7,199-yard Arnold Palmer Golf Course at the Turtle Bay Resort.
UNLV grabbed the team lead with a 2-under par 286, Central Oklahoma and UC Riverside are one stroke back, while Virginia (289, +1) and tournament host Hawai’i (291, +3) round out the top five. UC Riverside’s Brendan Steele is the individual leader at 5-under par 67.
At the turn, Portland was at even par as Easterly set the pace with a 34. The back nine was not as good to the Pilots as Johnson’s 36 was the best incoming score.
Junior Keven Beavers is tied for 58th at 4-over (76), sophomore John Marty counted his round and is tied at 75th with a 78, while senior Mike McCabe will look to improve his first round 79.
Play resumes tomorrow for 18 holes at the resort’s par 72, 6,535-yard George Fazio Course, before the final round back at the Arnold Palmer Course on Wednesday.
