EUGENE, Ore. -- The Oregon Ducks used an 18-4 run after halftime to gain a 20-point lead and cruised to a 63-46 victory against Portland Friday night in the season opener for both teams. Senior forward Cathrine Kraayeveld tallied a game-high 14 points for the Ducks, while Pilot senior forward Jamie Medley recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
UO guard Corrie Mizusawa and Kraayeveld scored back-to-back lay-ups to begin the second-half onslaught. Freshman Kristen Forristall and Kraayeveld connected with two straight three-pointers a few minutes later to cap the run and move the UO lead to 45-25. Pilot senior Ashlee Orndorff, who was limited to five minutes in the first half after picking up two early fouls, halted the run with a jumper at the 13:22 mark of the period, but the damage was done.
The Ducks led a majority of the first half, but Portland pulled to within 23-21 on consecutive three-pointers by junior guard Whitney Grant and sophomore forward Nicole Rowe. Oregon responded with a pair of lay-ups by Gabrielle Richards and Kraayeveld for a 27-21 halftime lead.
Orndorff, voted as a top five returner by West Coast Conference coaches, would finish with eight points, six rebounds and four blocked shots in 21 minutes. The Ducks shot 44 percent (24-54) for the game, compared to the Pilots 34 percent (18-53). Both teams found the range from beyond the arc, with Oregon hitting 8-of-14 three-pointers and the Pilots connecting on 6-of-15 from downtown.
The Ducks held a 38-30 edge on the boards and had good productivity off the bench, racking up 25 points from reserves compared to Portland’s eight bench points.
Grant finished with eight points for the Pilots, while fellow guard Hanna Seltzer played all 40 minutes in the loss.
Portland looks to rebound on Sunday, Nov. 21 as they take on crosstown rival Portland State at the Chiles Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
