PORTLAND, Ore. --The University of Portland women’s basketball team lost two players to injuries during the game and was plagued with 39 turnovers as the Cal Poly Mustangs went on to win, 55-51 tonight at the Chiles Center. Portland drops to 1-2 overall, while the Mustangs improve to 2-0 on the season.
“We’ve got to reorganize after this game,” said Portland head coach Jim Sollars. “We didn’t anticipate two knee injuries tonight, but we’ve got to execute down the stretch and when you’re short handed you’ve got to play smarter than this.”
For the game, Jamie Medley led the Pilots with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Amy Botto chipped in 10 points. Ashlee Orndorff led Portland on the board with 10. As a team, the Plots shot 20-of-45 from the field, just 3-of-12 from long range and 8-of-14 from the stripe.
After an ugly start, the Pilots got on the board at the 18 minute mark on a Whitney Grant three-pointer for a 3-2 Pilot lead. With 17:19 left in half, senior Hanna Seltzer went down with a knee injury as she came down from an attempted rebound. Freshman Amanda Afa’ese followed Seltzer on the disabled list, also with a knee injury, coming off the dribble at the 14 minute mark. Portland then went on a 6-0 run sparked by a Jamie Medley 15 footer from the corner, a Brooke Fernandez trey and a Meagan Bermingham pull up bank shot off a fast break. The Mustangs responded and regained the lead, 22-21, with 3:06 left on a three-pointer by Michelle Henke. Cal Poly went into the lockerroom with a 30-25 halftime lead.
After the break, the Pilots regrouped and jumped out to a 34-30 lead on a 9-0 run. The Mustangs chipped away at the cushion, and then went on a 9-0 run of their own at the nine minute mark. With 4:21 remaining, the Pilots tied the game at 45 on a coast-to-coast lay in by Whitney Grant. Cal Poly led, 53-51 with 25 seconds remaining, but it was Portland’s ball. The Pilots turned the ball over and then immediately fouled CPU’s Sparkle Anderson, sending her to the line. Anderson sealed the deal, converting both frees for a 55-51 Mustang win.
Twelve Mustangs saw action in the game tonight as no CPU player scored in double-figures. Nicole Yarwasky led the team with eight points for the game. CPU shot 31 percent from the floor, 23 percent from three-point range and 83 percent from the free-throw line.
Portland returns to action tomorrow afternoon, taking on the Vikings of Portland State at 3:30 p.m. at the Stott Center.
