PORTLAND- Portland outscored crosstown rival Portland State 31-19 in the first half, playing without two key players and still managed to pull out a 66-59 victory Saturday afternoon at the Stott Center. Portland evens out with a 2-2 overall record with the win, while Portland State drops its second straight and moves to 0-2 on the year. Both of PSU’s losses thus far have come from the Pilots.
Portland’s frontcourt tandem of Ashlee Orndorff and Jamie Medley proved to be too much for the undersized Vikings to handle. Both players racked up double-doubles, combining for 26 points and 27 rebounds, along with six assists and seven steals in the game. Medley finished with a team-high 15 points and 14 boards on 6-of-11 shooting, while Orndorff finished the game with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Portland held a 26-24 edge in points in the paint and 5-1 advantage on blocked shots.
Neither team scored for the first two minutes of play until two freebies by Jamie Medley gave the Pilots an early 2-0 lead. The game was close throughout the first 10 minutes of play until Portland went on an 11-2 run with just over six minute remaining in the first half. A fastbreak lay up by Megan Bermingham and an Amy Botto 12-footer with less than a minute to go in the half gave Portland a 31-19 lead heading into the break.
Bermingham and senior Ashlee Orndorff led the team with seven points each in the first half. Orndorff also grabbed eight boards before the break as Portland shot an efficient 48 percent (11-23) from the floor and out rebounded the Vikings 23-20 in the first half.
In the second half, Portland State out-scored the Pilots 40-35, and took a 49-48 lead with just over five minutes remaining. Portland kept its composure and stayed focused as the team shifted gears with a 9-2 run with just over a minute left to play. Portland made 11-of-its-last-14 free-throws down the stretch to secure a 66-59 victory.
PSU had three players score in double-figures on the day. Heidi Stuart led the team with 15 points on 6-of-16 shooting from the floor, while Heather Arns recorded 14 points and six rebounds. Jameelah Magee chipped in 10 points in the game. The Vikings shot 33 percent (26-79) from the floor, 31 percent (5-16) from three-point range and was 2-of-2 (100 percent) from the stripe.
Portland returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 30, taking on the Cougars of Brigham Young at 7:00 p.m. at the Chiles Center.
