TAIPEI CITY, Taiwan - Former University of Portland goalkeeper Scott Hileman started three of six matches for the United States Futsal Team at the 2004 FIFA Futsal World Championships, which took place Nov. 21-Dec. 5 at the National Taiwan University New Gymnasium.
The U.S. advanced to the final eight after finishing in second-place in Group C action by defeating Paraguay 3-1 and tying Japan 1-1. In other Group C action, the Americans fell to European Champion Italy by a 6-3 margin. Hileman recorded 12 saves against the talented Italians in the opening match of the tournament.
Argentina defeated the U.S. 3-1 in the first match of the second stage and the Americans were eliminated by Ukraine 3-1. Hileman played well against the Ukrainians, racking up 17 saves. The U.S. closed out the tournament with an entertaining 8-5 loss to Brazil in which Hileman tallied 14 saves and an assist.
Hileman played for the Pilots between 1992-94 and is second all-time with a 0.88 career goals-against average. Futsal is a sport that is a derivative of soccer and played with five-man teams on a basketball style court, with no walls and a low bouncing ball, unlike the traditional sport of U.S. indoor soccer played with six-man squads and walls.
