EUGENE, Ore. -- Portland cut a 26-point first-half deficit to as low as 13 points, but Oregon proved too strong on its home floor in a 92-67 victory Wednesday night at McArthur Court. Freshman sensation Malik Hairston led Oregon (8-1) with 20 points, while junior guard Pooh Jeter led all scorers with 22 points for Portland (9-4) and freshman Marcus Lewis recorded his second double-double of the year with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
The Ducks win their third straight against the Pilots and improve to 21-1 all-time against UP at McArthur Court. Oregon improves to 5-0 at home this season and increases its non-conference home winning streak to 31 games. Oregon’s lone loss this season was an 83-66 defeat against currently top-ranked Illinois.
The Ducks held a 41-26 edge in rebounds, converting 17 offensive rebounds into 23 second chance points. Oregon controlled the interior with a 40-28 advantage in the paint and shot 59 percent from the field for the game. After a sluggish start, the Pilots finished at 42 percent from the floor.
“A lot of credit goes to Oregon as they played focus from the start,” said Pilot head coach Michael Holton. “I thought that we paid for everything we did wrong defensively. They put on a clinic tonight and had command throughout. Oregon got lots of extra shots and extra possessions, which was the difference in the game.”
Portland came within 13 points at 64-51 midway through the second half following consecutive three-pointers from Jeter and a pair of free-throws by Ben Sullivan, but Oregon left little doubt with a 13-2 run over the next three minutes to push the lead back up to 24 points on Brandon Lincoln’s runner in the lane.
Oregon dominated both ends of the floor early, as the game seemed on its way to a blowout before halftime. The Ducks made five of their first six shots and finished the period 20-of-31 (65 percent) from the field. Portland shot just 38 percent in the half, including 2-of-9 from three-point range. UO used an 18-2 run midway through the half to grab a 26-point lead at 45-19 at the 3:29 mark. Portland showed resolve and went into the locker room with a 12-0 run, cutting the lead to 45-31. Darren Cooper started the run with a jumper and three-pointer and Jeter finished the half with the final seven points.
Jeter made 7-of-16 from the floor, 3-of-6 from downtown and was a perfect 5-for-5 from the charity stripe for his 22 points. Lewis gave an inspired effort off the Pilot bench and was the only Portland player with more than three rebounds. He finished 5-of-8 from the field, 3-of-5 from the free-throw line and added three assists. Sullivan tied a career-high with 13 points on 4-of-5 shooting and 4-of-4 from the line.
Hairston was efficient going 9-of-13 from the field for 20 points, adding six rebounds and three assists. Sophomore guard Aaron Brooks nailed 3-of-6 treys and finished with 17 points, while eight other Ducks finished with at least four points.
The Pilots return to the Chiles Center on Thursday, capping a doubleheader with the women’s team against the Idaho Vandal. The women face Utah Valley State at 5:15 p.m., while the men’s tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
