PORTLAND — Donald Wilson led four Portland players in double figures with 14 points in an 81-66 victory over Idaho Thursday night at the Chiles Center. Darren Cooper added 13 points for the Pilots (10-4), while Dandrick Jones led all scorers with 18 points for the Vandals (2-9).
The Pilots shot a season-high 61 percent from the field and held Idaho to 46 percent shooting, while gaining a 48-32 advantage in the paint.
Pooh Jeter and Marcus Lewis also reached double figures for Portland, with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Anton Lyons and Tanoris Shepard added 16 points each for the Vandals.
The Pilots shot 64 percent from the field in the second half and held a 26-12 edge in bench points for the game. Leading 41-33 at halftime, Portland used a 26-11 run after the break to build a 69-44 lead with nine minutes remaining.
“Tonight was an important win for us,” said Pilot head coach Michael Holton. “We did a good job in our rebounding against a high-energy team, our effort was constant and we addressed the need for execution down the stretch. This team is really focused and they want to take the floor and get better.”
Wilson sparked the second-half rally with eight points and a pair of assists in the first seven minutes. The junior swingman ignited the crowd of 1,040 by slamming home a pass off the backboard from Cooper in transition, then finishing a backdoor lob from Jeremiah Dominguez on the next possession around the 13 minute mark.
All 12 players on Portland’s active roster saw action, with 11 Pilots getting in the scoring column. Sophomore forward Ben Sullivan made his first start of the season and responded with eight points and a game-high eight rebounds. Senior center Andreas Gahlmann also chipped in eight points on a perfect 4-of-4 shooting, while Dominguez finished with a season-high six assists in 25 minutes of action.
“It is really good that everyone got to play because they all made a contribution tonight,” noted Holton. “Everyone that came in executed our game-plan.”
The Pilots used a 10-2 run midway through the first half to gain a 30-19 lead and would not trail the rest of the way. Portland made 11 of its first 19 shot attempts as Jeter scored 11 first half points. Jones scored 10 points before the break for the Vandals to keep the game within reach.
Portland returns to the Chiles Center hardwood on Sunday, Jan. 2 to face the Idaho State Bengals at 3:30 p.m. The Pilots defeated ISU 82-73 in Pocatello earlier this season. The game will be preceded by the Pilot women against Weber State at 1 p.m.
