SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.- The Portland Pilots fell to 0-3 on the season after suffering a 13-0 setback to Big 12 power Missouri (2-0) Saturday afternoon. The Tigers broke open the game with a six-run eighth inning to bury the Pilots. Portland scattered eight hits for the day, but could not bring a runner around to home plate.
Pilot freshman Sean Sargent took the mound and looked solid through the first three innings, not allowing a run and giving up just two hits while striking out four. The Tigers got to Sargent in the fourth with a pair of runs, then added four more in the fifth to make it 6-0. The freshman right-hander got out of the sixth without incident before handing the ball to sophomore lefty Andrew Renyer.
After a scoreless seventh, Missouri brought home six runs on five hits in the eighth. Senior Kevin Clausen relieved Renyer to get the final two outs, and finished the game for the Pilots as the Tigers added one more in the ninth for a 13-0 final.
Erik Dessau pitched six scoreless innings for Missouri, while Mark Alexander struck out five Pilots in the final three frames to combine for the shutout. Portland advanced runners to third base five times during the game, but each time the Tigers were able to get out of the inning.
Sargent’s line read 6.0 innings, eight hits, six runs and six strikeouts. Outfielder Billy Krause was the only Pilot with two hits, making it three straight contests with a hit for the freshman. Senior Jeff Crinklaw also extended his hit streak to three with a triple in the first inning.
Jeremy Gonzalez went 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI for Missouri. Mense Hunter and Tyler Williams each had two hits and two RBI as well.
The Pilots conclude the weekend with another match-up against the Missouri Tigers on Sunday, Feb. 15 at 9:00 a.m.
