Box Score SEATTLE, Wash. - The University of Portland men’s tennis team fell short as the 10th-ranked Washington Huskies (6-1) did not drop a match or a set at any position in registering a 7-0 blanking on Friday night at the Lloyd Nordstrom Tennis Center. Portland drops to 2-2 on the season.
“We actually competed pretty well despite the lopsided score,” said Head Coach Aaron Gross. “This is as good a team UW has had since I have been here, and they have had a lot of good teams. Some of the bright spots included serving for the match at No. 3 doubles. Thabani (Sithole) and James (Redpath) played very well but just got a little nervous near the end and could not finish. Quinn (Borchard) played a very competitive singles match against a solid UW No. 3 (No. 61 ranked Christoph Palmanshofer). He redeemed himself after a very un Borchard-like performance against Idaho last week. He battled tooth and nail today. Peter Miskovic did not play his best tennis but was still just two points away from winning the second set.
“Playing teams like UW is great for our team,” said Gross. “We have a young team and these opportunities provide us good feedback on where we need to improve. Also, I think it motivates our young players to really try and work and see if we can move our program to a higher level to be able to compete against the UW’s consistently in the future.
“We have a day off before going against UCSB on Sunday in the most important match of the season so far,” said Gross. “I think we have learned a lot in the last couple of matches and hopefully we can put some of those lessons to use on Sunday.”
