SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.- The University of Portland dropped their second straight contest on the road, falling to the University of San Francisco, 83-72. The Pilots (10-14, 4-7 WCC) had four players in double figures, led by Dustin Geddis’ 17 points and 10 rebounds. The Dons (15-12, 5-6 WCC) shot a Portland opponent season-high 54 percent from the field and had four players record double-doubles.
“San Francisco was hungry tonight,” said Pilots head coach Michael Holton. “They were focused, determined and knocked down shots, particularly with the game in balance through the second half.”
The Dons led by as much as 15 points late in the second half, but withstood many Pilot rallies by hitting clutch shots down the stretch. USF shot a remarkable 64 percent in the second period, including 4-of-8 from three-point range.
USF rode Tyrone Riley when it counted, as Riley scored seven straight points to give the Dons their first double-digit lead of the night at 47-37 with a wide-open three from the top of the key at the15:50 mark.
The Pilots would battle back with a 10-2 run highlighted by two Dustin Geddis put-backs and a three-point play by Adam Quick. The Dons then went on a 10-2 run of their own to get the lead back to double-digits at 59-49, concluded by a Jerome Gumbs three-pointer.
Quick put the Pilots on his shoulders to bring the game back within reach over the next five minutes, finding backcourt mate Pooh Jeter for consecutive backdoor lay-ups, with a pair of long bounce passes. He then nailed a three and two free throws to cut the lead down to 66-60, but that would be as close as Portland would get.
Gumbs was left alone on the baseline for two short jumpers following a Jason Gaines lay-up to push the lead to 72-60. Geddis’ thunderous follow dunk made it 10, but then Quick was hit with a technical foul after a questionable hand-check foul call and Riley made both free throws to seal the victory.
USF 54 percent (30-for-56) from the floor, 44 percent (7-for-16) from three-point range and 83 percent (19-for-23) at the free throw line on the night. The Pilots made 40 percent (25-for-63) from the field, 33 percent (4-for-12) from downtown and 68 percent (19-for-28) from the charity stripe.
Portland kept it close in the first half behind the active play of freshman forward Dreshawn Vance, who scored eight points in the first 20 minutes. Down by eight points with just under four minutes left in the period, the Pilots took some momentum into the break as Geddis fed Donald Wilson for a lay-up with 4.4 seconds remaining, pulling Portland within five at 36-31.
The Dons had too many players step up though as Gumbs and Riley each scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. The points were career-highs for both players. Gumbs was 7-of-7 from the floor, made both of his three-point attempts and 6-of-7 on free throws. James Bayless added 13 points and 10 boards, while Andre Hazel scored 10 and dished out 10 assists. USF moved to 10-0 on the season when scoring more than 70 points.
Geddis played very well for the Pilots, finishing with his second double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds. He went 7-of-13 shooting and had two steals.
“Dustin had a big game for us,” Holton said. “He stepped up and provided tremendous senior leadership tonight.”
Jeter scored 16 points for the Pilots, while Quick and Wilson finished with 15 and 12 points, respectively.
The Pilots next travel to Spokane, Wash. to face WCC-leading Gonzaga on Wednesday, Feb. 18, with a 7:30 p.m. start-time. The game will be televised on Fox Sports Northwest.
