PORTLAND, Ore.- The Portland Pilots committed five errors and had three leadoff walked batters come around to score as Utah Valley State took a 7-4 decision at Pilot Stadium Tuesday afternoon. The Wolverines (4-9) won their second straight contest after beating Oregon State on Sunday, while Portland (3-17) extended their losing skid to six games.
Wolverine right-hander Jed Jenson (1-2) recorded the win after seven solid innings allowing three runs on six hits and striking out six. Todd Bateman registered the final four outs of the game for his second save of the season. Pilot sophomore left-hander Jared Adams (0-4) labored through four innings, giving up four runs on five hits and walking four batters. Three of Adams walks led off innings and all three baserunners came around to eventually score. Freshman reliever Given Kutz pitched five innings of relief, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and he struck out three batters.
Portland committed a season-high five errors on the day and left 10 runners on base. The Pilots were 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position, while UVSC pounded out 11 hits and were 6-for-16 at the plate in RBI situations.
The Wolverines scored a run in the second and added two more in the third inning for a 3-0 early lead, but Portland answered with three of their own in the bottom of the fourth to knot it up at 3-3.
Mike McRae led off with a single up the middle and Joe Watson followed with a one-out single in the hole. Billy Krause walked to load the bases and after an infield fly, Trevor Hahn drew another walk to score McRae. Gustaf Little then hit a clutch two-run single scoring Krause and Watson to tie the game.
UVSC responded with an RBI double from Trent Perry in the fifth, scoring Ryan K. Jones who reached first on Adams’ fourth walk of the day. Kutz spelled Adams and was forced to induce an inning-ending double play after two Pilot errors from the left side of the infield loaded the bases.
The Wolverines got two more in the eighth on Reno Mendenhall’s RBI double and a run-scoring single from Jeremy Harris. Watson singled and scored on a wild pitch for Portland’s final run in the eighth and UVSC added one more in the ninth for the 7-4 final.
Perry was 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI to lead the Wolverines. Little finished 1-for-4 with a walk and two RBI for Portland. His nine runs driven in this season are third best on the team despite his position at the top of the order. Rhett Parker and Watson each had two hits for Pilots.
“Gus (Little) is a kid who is getting the most out of his ability,” said Pilot head coach Chris Sperry. “He gives us everything he’s got every single day. He’s been the sparkplug for us, but we haven’t done a lot to move him along and score him. We’ve been struggling with our 4-5-6 spots in the order, no matter who is in those spots. Our 1-2-3 hitters have been doing a pretty good job lately, but we need better hitting. They say hitting is contagious, if that’s the case then we need a few guys to get sick.”
Portland and Utah Valley State conclude the two-game series tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. The Pilots return to WCC action on March 26-28 with a three-game series against Pepperdine at Pilot Stadium.
