PORTLAND, Ore.- The University of Portland baseball team hung around for seven innings Sunday before Pepperdine pulled away for a 13-5 win on a sunny afternoon at Pilot Stadium. The win gives Pepperdine (11-14, 5-1 WCC) a three-game sweep against the Pilots (3-21, 0-6). The loss is Portland’s tenth in a row as the Pilots are still searching for their first West Coast Conference win.
Portland looked good early taking a 4-3 lead into the sixth inning. Pepperdine responded with a run in the sixth, four in the seventh, three in the eighth and two in the ninth. Pilot freshman pitcher Sean Sargent pitched six solid innings before surrendering the four Wave runs in the seventh. Sargent falls to 1-3 overall on the season and was replaced by Jared Adams who pitched one inning. Trevor Hahn pitched the final two innings for Portland. Brandon Boesch (1-3) went six innings on the mound for Pepperdine to pick up his first win on the year. Boesch gave up four runs on six hits and recorded four strikeouts.
Portland leadoff hitter Gustaf Little got the game started for the Pilots in the bottom of the first inning by doubling the first pitch he saw from Boesch. Little then took third on a fly ball by Travis Vetters and scored on a Jeffrey Crinklaw double down the leftfield line.
The 1-0 lead was short lived for Portland as Pepperdine scored two in the top of the third. Steve Kleen went yard for the second time this series giving the Waves the lead with the two-run blast to deep leftfield. The Waves added another run in the fourth making it 3-1.
The Pilot bats came alive in the bottom of the fourth as Portland scored three runs on three hits. Joe Watson picked up only his second RBI of the season with a shot to right field that brought home Travis Vetters. The Pilots then scored on a Pepperdine fielding error and took the lead when Gustaf Little was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Pepperdine then tied it in the sixth and took the lead for good with the four runs in the seventh. Waves’ designated hitter Steve Kleen continued to abuse Pilot pitchers. Kleen went 3-5 on the day with five RBI’s. His RBI single in the seventh proved to be the winner. The Waves finished with 20 hits overall.
Portland came up with 10 hits led by Little and Rhett Parker who both had two hits. The Pilots stranded eight runners on the bases while Pepperdine left nine. The Pilots also limited their errors to only two.
Next up for Portland are the Oregon State Beavers who come to town Tuesday for a 2:00 p.m. game at Pilots Stadium.
