PORTLAND, Ore.- The Oregon State Beavers made it a rough afternoon for the University of Portland Pilot baseball team as the Beavs pounded the Pilots, 25-4 in a non-conference match-up at Pilot Stadium. Oregon State put up 21 hits en route to the win and hit four home runs. The game was a make up of a washed out game originally scheduled for yesterday, March 30. Portland falls to 3-22 (0-3 WCC) on the year while Oregon State improves to 17-7 (2-1 Pac-10).
The Pilots did hit two home runs on the afternoon, courtesy of Jeffrey Crinklaw and Travis Vetters. Crinklaw’s second blast of the year came in the fourth inning and was a two-run shot that made the score 13-2, in favor of the Beavers. Vetters hit his second home run of the year in the eighth inning. The dinger came with no Pilot runners on base.
The Beaver hurlers held Portland to six hits on the afternoon.
Oregon State had no problems at the plate as Shea McFeely led the way with eight RBI’s. McFeely was 3-for-5 at the plate with a double and a home run. Aaron Mathews knocked in five runs for Oregon State. He also hit a double and a home run as he went 4-for-7 on the day.
Joe Jones (0-1) picked up the loss on the hill for the Pilots in his first start of the year. The Beavers used a bevy of pitchers, but it was Jonah Nickerson (2-0) who picked up the win.
The Pilots now hit the road for a weekend series at Santa Clara. Portland battles the Broncos on April 2-4 for three West Coast Conference games. Then it’s back to Pilot Stadium for a non-conference match-up with the Washington Huskies on April 6.
