BEAUMONT, Calif.- The University of Portland men’s golf team finished in 12th place of the 16-team field in the UC Riverside Braveheart Classic at the PGA of Southern California Golf Club. The Pilots shot a first round 312 and were tied for eighth place after the first round, but struggled to a 328 second round before finishing with a 308 Tuesday afternoon. Tony Peressini’s final round 74 moved him into a tie for 24th place individually, claiming the highest Pilot finish.
Boise State’s Graham DeLaet took the individual title, edging Utah’s Garrett Clegg by one stroke with a 6-over par 222. Saint Mary’s won the team crown after firing a third round 299 and three-round total of 909. Portland was 39 strokes behind the Gaels with a 948.
Peressini’s 233 (75-84-74) proved to be Portland’s top individual performance, while Mike McCabe tied for 41st with a 236 (80-80-76). Kevin Beavers, who was tied for sixth place after round one, finished in a tie for 52nd place at 239 (74-84-81), John Marty tied for 70th after a solid third round 77 and a 245 (86-82-77), and Jake Easterly tied for 77th with a 247 (83-82-82).
The Pilots hit the greens again at the 2004 Duck Invitational, hosted by the University of Oregon and played at Shadow Hills Country Club on March 22-23.
